Tips to find out the cutting length and weight of lintel steel

In this construction video tutorial, Mukesh Shah, the eminent engineer, provides some useful guidance on working out cutting length and weight of lintel steel as well as bar bending schedule of lintel.

The objective of a lintel is to bear the load of the brickwork above it and for this purpose RCC work is done. Below the window, the PCC work is done with sill to fix the fastener efficiently.

The calculation is done based on the following dimensions:-

Length of the lintel is taken as 2000 mm or 2 meter

After section cut, in lower section of lintel, there are two main rods with 10 meter dia and upper section there are two main rods with 8 meter dia. The stirrup contains 8 dia @200 c/c. The size of the lintel is 200 mm x 200 mm. The clear cover is given as 25 mm on both sides.

To find out the length of steel, the following formula is used:-

Length of steel (10 dia) = (Length of lintel – Clear cover) x no. of bar

= (2000 – 50) x 2 = 3900 mm or 3.9 m

Length of steel (8 dia) = (Length of lintel – Clear cover) x no. of bar

= (2000 – 50) x 2 = 3900 mm or 3.9 m

To find out the weight of steel, the following formula is used:-

Weight of steel (10 dia) = Length x d2/162 = 3.9 x (102)/162 = 2.4 kg

Weight of steel (8 dia) = 3.9 x (82)/162 = 1.54 kg
